Master Thesis: Standardization and integration of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)
About Horse Powertrain
Horse Powertrain Limited is an independent new powertrain solutions business, with over 125 years of heritage from Renault and Geely. We develop and produce world-class hybrid and combustion engines and transmissions to move our industry forward, offering many different paths to net zero.
Horse Powertrain has 19,000 dedicated and determined employees, working in 17 manufacturing plants, and 5 R&D centers on three continents. This role is employed by Horse Powertrain Ltd and is based at head office in London, with occasional travel possible to Horse Powertrain’s other sites.
Thesis Opportunity
Are you passionate about automation, robotics, and smart manufacturing? is looking for a thesis student to help define how Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) can be safely and efficiently integrated into our production environment.
AMRs are becoming a key enabler of flexible and automated material handling. To support future deployments, we need a standardized approach that ensures safety, scalability, and seamless integration with existing automation solutions.
Your Challenge
In this thesis, you will investigate questions such as:
What interfaces and safety functions are required between AMRs and surrounding automation systems?
How can AMR operating areas, charging stations, and fire safety solutions be standardized?
How can existing processes and automation infrastructure be reused to simplify AMR implementation?
Purpose
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate and develop a standardized approach for specific AMR-based transport solution.
By doing so, the project aims to:
Establish common working methods and standards.
Simplify support, maintenance, and future development.
Reduce implementation effort.
Enable faster deployment of automation solutions.
Goal
The goal is to develop a recommended framework for AMR integration that supports safe, efficient, and scalable implementation across Horse Powertrains production facility in Skövde.
Expected outcomes include:
A safety and integration assessment for AMR deployment.
Recommendations for standardizing AMR operating environments.
Identification of reusable solutions from existing automation systems.
Guidelines and best practices for future AMR implementations.
